Portraying the Brooklyn Bridge / Retratando el Puente Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Bridge was built between 1870 and 1883 to connect the district of Brooklyn with Manhattan. At the inauguration, the work designed and built by the company of John Augustus Roebling, was the world's largest suspension bridge, measuring 1800 meters. Today it´s an emblem of XIX century engineering and a symbol of New York that contributes to the identity of the city.

Thousands of tourists and New Yorkers pass over the bridge each day during the four seasons of the year, some for sports, others to see in person this wonderful bridge, some to enjoy the stunning views and others simply to move between districts in their daily life.

There are a lot pictures of this beautiful bridge, in diferent light conditions, from diferent points of shot, from helicopters or boats. So when I started to photopraphing this bridge I decided portray it as a person with his own story, for this purpose I mixed three things, evoke the time it was built, humanize it using the people who leave footprints along the bridge, and display this monument integrated into New York City. See more pictures here

El Puente Brooklyn fue construido entre 1870 y 1883 para conectar los distritos de Brooklyn con Manhattan. Al momento de su inauguración, la obra construida por la compañía de John Augustus Roebling, fue el puente colgante más grande del mundo con una longitud de 1800 metros. Hoy es un emblema de la ingeniería del siglo XIX y un símbolo de Nueva York que contribuye a la identidad de la ciudad.

Miles de turista y newyorkinos pasan por el puente cada día durante las cuatro estaciones del año, algunos para hacer deporte, otros para ver en persona este maravilloso puente, gente que disfruta de la excepcional vista y otros simplemente para moverse entre ambos distritos durante su vida diaria.

Hay muchísimas fotografías de este hermoso puente, en diferentes condiciones de luz, desde diferentes puntos de disparo, desde helicópteros y barcos. Cuando empecé a fotografiar este puente decidí retratarlo como si fuera una persona con su propia historia y para este propósito mezcle tres cosas, evocar el tiempo en que fue construido, humanizarlo usando a las personas que dejan sus huellas a lo largo del puente y mostrar este monumento integrado a la ciudad de Nueva York. PHOTO TIP: Close your mouth / Cierra la boca.

If you are photographing a protest and risk of repression is imminent, you should know that despair is your worst enemy, because in addition to losing the best pictures you could be injured after tripping or being hit by the crowd.

A photographer or reporter who cover this kind of events   never have to use military clothes, but to have a good helmet and a gas mask is a great help and protection. I never used them because I did not have ones and I thought that it could bother me, but I recommend you.

This photo tip is dedicated to those who do not have a gas mask. "Keep your mouth closed" do not talk, do not breathe through your mouth, just keep your lips together all the time and breathe slowly through your nose, the gases will affect you less if you do not come into your stomach, you can make your job a little time more to reach a safe place. When you've finished your work spreads mentolatum around your eyes, nose and lips, this will help you to feel better. Smoking a cigarette at that time will also help a little.

Si estás fotografiando una manifestación y el riesgo de represión es inminente, debes saber que la desesperación es tu peor enemigo, porque además de perderte las mejores fotos puedes resultar herido tras tropezar o ser atropellado por la multitud.

Un fotógrafo o periodista que cubre este tipo sucesos jamás debe vestir prendas militares, sin embargo contar con un buen casco y una máscara para los gases es de gran ayuda y protección. Yo nunca los usé porque no los tenía y porque pensaba que me incomodaría, pero si se los recomiendo.

Este foto tip está dedicado para quienes no tienen una máscara para los gases. "Mantén cerrada la  boca" no hables ni tomes aire por la boca, solo mantén pegados los labios todo el tiempo y respira suavemente por la nariz, los gases te afectarán menos si no entran a tu estómago, podrás hacer tu trabajo un buen tiempo más hasta llegar a un lugar seguro. Cuando hayas terminado tu trabajo, untar mentolatum alrededor de los ojos, en la nariz y en los labios te ayudará a sentirte mejor. Fumar un cigarrillo en ese momento también ayudará un poco.

PHOTO TIP: The right moment / El momento preciso.

One of the main characteristics of a good picture is that it´s shot at the right moment. To achieve this, my advice is that you anticipate what may happen, it's not difficult but you will need to be very patient.

I follow these steps: I identify my subject, I visualize and choose the background, I measure the light and constantly adjust the focus (manual focus is the best for these cases). Once prepared I just wait for something interesting to happen, I never talk with my subjects before photographing them.

Una de las principales características de una buena foto es haberla hecho en el momento preciso, para eso el consejo que les doy es que se adelanten a lo que va ha suceder, no es muy difícil pero necesitarás tener mucha paciencia.

Yo sigo los siguientes pasos: Identifico al sujeto, visualizo y escojo el fondo, mido la luz y ajusto el enfoque constantemente (el foco manual es el que mejor funciona en estos casos). Una vez preparado todo lo anterior solo espero a que algo interesante suceda ya que nunca converso con mis sujetos antes de fotografiarlos.

This girl was working in the street, she is a model, there was a moment that she was unconfortable with my presence, following her all the time then she did this pose for me. / Esta chica estaba trabajando en la calle, es una modelo, hubo un momento en que se sintió incómoda con mi presencia siguiéndola todo el tiempo hasta que hizo este gesto para mi.

This girl works posing in Time Square for tourists, she was speaking with her friend and I just was waiting for a natural smile. / Esta chica trabaja posando para los turistas en Time Square, se encontraba conversando con su amigo y yo solo estaba esperando una sonrisa natural.

The famous Naked Cowboy of New York, I was siting on the street waiting for some women expression or reaction and this hapened. / El famoso Vaquero Desnudo de Nueva York, yo estaba sentado sobre la calle esperando la reacción o expresión de alguna mujer y esto fue lo que pasó.

When I walk in the streets I always hold my camara ready for a shoot, whith the focus range between 1,5 meters to 3 meters f:8 of diafragm in my 35mm lens. I had just one second for photograph this guy. / Cuando camino por las calles siempre llevo mi cámara lista para disparar, con el rango de enfoque entre 1,5 metros a 3 metros, diafragma 8 en mi lente 35mm. Yo solo tuve un segundo para fotografíar a este muchacho.

Secure Job / Trabajo Seguro

After the severe economic crisis that hit the country of the north, many workers lost their jobs, some were hired again but with a lower salary. It was the professional class that suffered the most. The need led many to appeal to their creativity to invent their new labor source, today you can find more kinds of jobs than we ever imagined.

The Naked Cow Girls.

The good weather conditions are present in New York and for many the season to make good money has started. Time Square, one of the points most frequented by tourists who come to visit Manhattan, is the workplace of some who dress as a character or simply pose less dressed for those willing to give them a tip. The most famous character is the Naked Cowboy, about who I´ll dedicate a full post in the future because he is a person with a great business vision, his story will surprise you, but meanwhile I share with you some photos I took in recent days of some people in their "Secure Jobs".

Después de la fuerte crisis económica que ha golpeado al país del norte, muchos trabajadores perdieron sus empleos, unos cuantos fueron re contratados pero con un salario más bajo, fue la clase profesional la que más ha sufrido. La necesidad ocasionó que muchos apelaran a su creatividad para inventar su nueva fuente laboral, hoy se pueden encontrar oficios que jamás hubiéramos imaginado.

El buen clima se hace presente en Nueva York y para muchos empieza la temporada de hacer un buen dinero. Time Square, uno de los puntos más concurridos por los turistas que vienen a visitar Manhattan, es el lugar de trabajo de algunos quienes disfrazados de algún personaje o simplemente vestidos con poca ropa posan para quienes están dispuestos a darles una propina.
